Looking Older Due to Collagen Loss? Dermal Fillers Can Help

Eating right, getting enough exercise, and taking good care of your skin are all important parts of self-care, but not even the best personal regimen can fight the signs of aging forever.

As you age, natural collagen deposits in the face and throughout the body begin to break down. Collagen helps skin stay plump and youthful looking. As the collagen decreases, your skin loses its elasticity and begins to sag and wrinkle.

Younger people can also experience collagen loss. Smoking, sun exposure, environmental factors, and genetics all play a part in how and when your natural collagen begins to disappear.

Many people use dermal fillers to improve volume and give their facial features the smooth, rejuvenated appearance they once had. If you’ve heard about “injectables,” you may already know more about dermal fillers than you realize.

Dermal filler treatments are injected into the skin to make facial features more symmetrical, smooth wrinkles and ease creases, and create a more youthful look.

How Do Dermal Fillers Work?

Dermal fillers are made from both naturally derived hyaluronic acid and synthetic materials. The material is injected directly into the problem area to “fill” it. With more volume in the cheeks or lips, the skin on top naturally smooths out, diminishing fine lines, wrinkles, and hollow areas where collagen has been lost.

Though dermal fillers are injections that help eliminate wrinkles, they are not the same as Botox. Botox is a brand name for a specific medication that eases wrinkles by relaxing the muscles underneath. Dermal fillers replace volume in pockets underneath the skin and are not injected into muscles.

Because they work differently and address different issues, many patients opt to combine Botox and dermal filler treatments for even more satisfying results.

Fillers also help revitalize skin by boosting natural collagen production. To the body, even the smallest injection is viewed as a wound, and the natural reaction to a wound is to increase collagen production to speed healing.

The amounts of collagen produced this way are minimal, but some dermal products are specifically formulated to stimulate collagen production. Ask your certified injection professional during your consultation about the different types of fillers we offer at BEYOUth Medspa + Wellness and their benefits.

Benefits of Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers for face, hands, and lips offer many benefits, including the following:

  • Add youthful plumpness to hollow areas
  • Reduce the appearance of scars, including acne scars
  • Improve facial contours and symmetry
  • Reduce early signs of aging
  • Boost natural collagen levels
  • Fill out and shape thin lips
  • Improve skin texture
  • Diminish dark spots
  • No downtime
  • Non-surgical

Dermal fillers are recommended for both men and women. Fillers are not FDA-approved for pregnant and nursing women; however, people who are in generally good health are good candidates for undergoing a dermal filler treatment.

What to Expect from Fillers: Will I Look Natural?

After “What is dermal fillers?”, the number-one question we receive from patients is “Will I look natural?” People who use fillers want to maintain a natural look without drastic changes to their appearance.

Our certified nurse injector works closely with every patient to understand their problem areas and aesthetic goals. We take pride in providing patients with high-quality cosmetic products and services that enhance their natural beauty.

During your initial consultation, our derma filler professional will take the time for a full evaluation of your needs and expectations. It may be necessary to temporarily stop taking certain medications or supplements, so it’s important that you share accurate medical information and answer all questions.

Facial rejuvenation with dermal fillers is both science and art. Different types of fillers are recommended for different results. A thicker filler may be appropriate for restoring volume loss in the cheeks or hands, while a softer material may be best for diminishing scars and other imperfections.

How long the results last can depend on the type of filler used and the treated area. Deeper injections can last as long as two years, while thinner products used to create contours may last 6 to 12 months.

We want every patient to feel confident about their decision to receive dermal fillers. If you have concerns about the procedure or related costs, we are happy to answer any questions.

How to Prepare for a Dermal Filler Appointment

Preparing for your appointment is simple. Whether you’re receiving dermal fillers for face, hands, or other areas, there are a few guidelines to keep in mind. We ask patients to avoid all types of waxing, tweezing, skin bleaching, or other products and procedures that might irritate the skin in the treatment area.

Also, avoid using sunscreen or exposure to strong sunlight for 24 hours before your appointment.

Please come to your appointment with clean, bare skin (no makeup) and free of lotions and perfumes. Your dermal professional will give you complete guidelines during the consultation.

Recovery is also easy, with no downtime required. Patients are free to return to normal activities immediately after their appointment. Avoid touching, pushing, or picking at injection sites, and avoid superheated activities such as spas or sunbathing.

You will notice a change in your appearance immediately; however, it takes a few days for the fillers to settle into the target area and reveal the final look.
