As your skin becomes less elastic, one of the first things you may notice is the development of fine lines and wrinkles on your face. However, unlike some of the wrinkles that can form because of a loss of collagen, others are more related to repetitive muscle movement and can sometimes even appear when you’re younger.
If you are looking for a wrinkle treatment for your dynamic wrinkles that has been tested and trusted by medical professionals for many years, you may benefit from Botox injections. Botox is still one of the most widely used neuromodulators because of its track record and consistent results. We look forward to helping you decide if Botox is right for you at BEYOUth Medspa + Wellness.
What Is Botox?
Botox is a medication that is injected into any area where the relaxation of the muscle is desirable. Cosmetically, it is used to prevent motion in the muscles that are causing your dynamic wrinkles. Expert Botox injections can help achieve smooth facial features that look younger and less lined. Botox can also be used in medical settings for migraines, excessive sweating, and muscle cramps.
How Does Botox Work?
Botox is what is known as a neuromodulator. Neuromodulators are substances that work to change the transmission of signals in the body. In the case of Botox, these neuromodulators block signals from the nerves to the muscle which prevents the contraction of these muscles. Once injected into an area such as a facial muscle, that muscle’s movements will be softened or paralyzed.
This helps to relax wrinkles because Botox will stop the muscles in this area from moving and causing the lines to fold. However, because it is a very targeted treatment, it leaves the surrounding muscles free to move, allowing you to retain your natural expressions.
What to Expect Before and After Botox
Your Consultation
One of the most important aspects of our services is our consultations. We know that your situation is unique and we enjoy finding ways to address your individual needs. Your consultation will include a health history and a discussion of your expectations for the treatment. We will have you make facial expressions so that we can plan your injections.
We will also talk about what results you are looking for from your treatment. Many people want results that still look natural rather than frozen. As part of your consultation, we will listen to you and help you form realistic expectations about what Botox can do for you.
Your Treatment
Consultations can often occur on the same day as your injections. Once you feel confident about the treatment, we can begin. We will clean your skin to remove any impurities and we may apply a topical anesthetic at this point. We will then inject the number of units of Botox that we discussed during your consultation. Your comfort is our priority during treatment. Let us know if you experience any pain or discomfort. Botox injections are typically very comfortable for the patient and shouldn’t cause more than a small pinch with each injection.
After Your Treatment
Following your treatment, you may notice some small bumps similar to mosquito bites where we injected the Botox. These should disappear within a few hours. There may be some mild itching, redness, or swelling, but all of these are normal and should quickly abate.
Right after treatment, you can drive yourself back home or to work. As a no-downtime treatment, you can plan Botox right into your day. We do recommend staying upright for 4 hours after treatment to give the medication time to settle into your injection area. You should avoid massaging your face or itching your injection sites.
How Long Does Botox Take to Work?
Are you looking forward to your Botox before and after? How long Botox takes to work will depend on your body chemistry, injection area, and the number of units injected. With Botox, the initial results can begin to appear after 5 to 7 days. You may need to wait up to 30 days for your wrinkles to completely relax.
If you decide to continue with Botox treatments, we recommend setting up a schedule of Botox injections every 3 or 4 months. With regular Botox injections, the muscles in your face can retrain themselves which can cause subsequent injections to be longer-lasting. After a time, you may be able to reduce your number of treatments to 2 or 3 times per year.
Are You a Good Candidate for Botox?
Botox can be the right treatment option for many people. It is recommended for individuals who have begun to develop dynamic wrinkles on their faces. The best candidates for this treatment are those who are not pregnant or nursing, who have good health, and who have had a consultation to know what they can expect from the treatment. This treatment can be offered to younger individuals who already have wrinkles or patients who wish to prevent wrinkles from forming. Botox Cosmetic is FDA-approved for the following areas:
- Forehead lines
- Frown lines or 11’s in between the eyebrows
- Crow’s feet
